Strength Training

I don’t spend time on organized strength training. I get my strength from natural daily activities like push mowing our large lawn in the summer, pushing my 2-year-old in the jogging stroller or carrying her around, heavy lifting around the house, etc.

My normal strength training includes pushing 2-year-old plus lots of books, toys, water, and healthy snacks on rough trails.

However, I was inspired by a fellow Oiselle Team member on twitter a few days ago, and I did pushups! I did 20-15-10-5 and it felt pretty good. I felt like I probably could have done 5 extra reps on each set, but wanted to take it easy my first time doing pushups in years! Will this become a weekly occurrence?

Do you follow an organized strength training routine or spend your extra workout time on your running?

Race for the Vase 2012 Recap

I originally wanted to run the Mountain Goat Run in Syracuse this weekend, but when I realized Jeff was going to be in Texas I knew childcare was going to be an issue. Syracuse is over 1.5 hours away so I decided to run a local 5k called Race for the Vase instead. I thought the race was in Honeoye Falls, which is a 15 minute drive from my house. In reality, the race was in Honeoye, which is a 50 minute drive! Oops! I didn’t realize this until just before bed the night before the race, and decided to race anyway.

When I arrived I realized this was going to be a small race without much competition. The roads weren’t closed for traffic so we ran on the berm. The course was essentially uphill for the first half and downhill for the last half. The hill was long, gradual and sort of annoying in a way where you couldn’t really attack it and be done with it. When I hit the first mile in 6:00, I had a feeling I wouldn’t hit my goal time of 17:30. I was able to push down the hill the last 1.5 miles and finish in 4th place overall (first female) in 18:13. This was my slowest 5k in over 2 years. (In July 2010 I ran 18:09 at Ten Ugly Men. My daughter was just 5 months old and slept peacefully most of the time!)

Gotta love that onesie.

Still, I am happy with the effort for the day. I ended up getting the course record which was good for $100 and the win got me a cool vase from The Wizard of Clay.

Check out how big my baby is now!

Favorite parts of the race:

  • Friendly, small race atmosphere – I like a race where everyone seems to know everyone and even though I only knew a few people I really felt a sense of community.
  • Cool pre-race announcer – The kid welcoming us and giving race instructions couldn’t have been older than 15 years old but he spoke with such confidence and had a comedic delivery. The kid just made the crowd smile, laugh and feel good.
  • Singing cross country kids – The group of local cross country kids were singing Pocketful of Sunshine by Natasha Bedingfield for the first quarter mile or so. Seriously, what sport is as much fun as running?!

Flower City Half Marathon 2012 Recap

I ran the Flower City Half yesterday in 1:22:18. I was 4th woman and got $200. The race was won is 1:20:12. I knew going into the race I would be slower than last year at this time when I was able to fairly easily run a 1:18 at the Glass City Half. Since November I have been running every day, but my workouts have been few and far between and the ones I have done have been short and not as fast as usual. This was my 4th race of the year and my best workouts have been my races.  I had lowered expectations because of the lack of fast workouts and the lack of long runs other than a 15 miler in Seattle with Oiselle ladies and a 14 miler last weekend. Still, I had confidence that I could come out and do something magical.

In an attempt to gain some fitness, I crammed a few workouts the 2 weeks before the half. Though some would argue I went in tired, I think the workouts helped. I’ve never tapered for a half (I think it is a good idea for people trying to peak for one!) and have run well on tired legs many times. The problem I ran into was having an emotionally exhausting week leading up to the race. Most of the time I can brush off, resolve, or put away things that are bothering me and possibly even use them to fuel a race, but when things build and I can’t find peace with them, it is hard for me to race well. This is my weakness.

I began this post with how the race played out, and there’s really nothing to note from during the race. I ran some miles. I mostly maintained 4th place the whole race. I existed. I was okay with the race yesterday, but woke up being angry with myself. I thought about it during my 5.5 mile recovery run today. I was just existing during the race. I wasn’t racing. I wasn’t really tempo-ing either. I was just out there existing. Sure, I enjoyed the run. I waved to spectators – the whole time! I smiled at people as I passed. That’s a great thing, and I respect people who race like that, but it’s not me. I like to put myself through pain and take chances and fight to the finish with someone, hoping to take the whole field down. I didn’t have that spark in me yesterday and it makes me sad. I was just existing. I wasn’t racing. I wasn’t responding to my competitors’ moves. I wasn’t being myself.

I’m moving on from yesterday’s race. I think writing about it and identifying the problem will make that easier. I hope to no longer just exist but get out there and do something special!

Look at tiny little me hiding in there among the crowd.

Yep, that’s me sporting the Oiselle singlet and roga shorts!

Do you finish races feeling like you had something left in the tank?  Are you ok with it? Do you regret it the next day?
